Text: Totally uninformed on this whole subject but it’s something I just thought about. If water can become de-oxygenated - does that mean hydrogen gas gets released too? What happens to the oxygen molecules? When water becomes oxygenated does that mean there are equal parts hydrogen and oxygen being introduced? If it’s just oxygen how do the atoms bond? Do they bond to excess hydrogen or what?? Is it different between fresh water and saltwater due to the salinity?

Text: In order to feed an expanding planetary population, farmers are constantly searching for efficient, cost-effective ways to grow agricultural products. Engineering biology approaches can potentially help improve yields and reduce costs, but several unknowns remain before these techniques can be deployed at scale. Which techniques are most effective for which crops? Does increasing yield mean a sacrifice in taste and cost? How can researchers work with farmers, consumers, industry partners and policymakers to ensure that 21st century farming best practices are sustained into the 22nd century (and beyond)?
Join us today at **2 PM ET/11 AM PT/18 UT** for an AMA to talk about all of these issues and more! We'll share about our current work focused on improving plant enzymes, discuss how researchers are using engineering biology to enhance agricultural production, and answer your questions about crop engineering.
Ask us anything!

Text: During the Ice Ages, almost all of my country Canada (for example) was completely covered by thick glaciers. Glaciers are of course desolate areas inhospitable to plants, and most animals either depend on the sea in some way or are simply moving through to somewhere else.
In those interglacial periods there must've been huge areas of forest, grasslands and such that were rendered inhospitable by the advancing cold, and later totally destroyed by glaciers. So a continent-sized area was effectively sterilized outside of microorganisms, relative to its prior conditions.
So what happened to everything that lived there? It's obvious what happened to the individual plants and such; they just died. Animals probably went south with the climate, and plants gradually migrated south by propagating there, but south of that there were already existing animals and ecosystems that were themselves being displaced by the cold, up to a point closer to the equator. Did everything effectively swap places for a few thousand years and then return like nothing happened? What about further south where the changes were more muted, did those areas get more "crowded", for lack of a better term, as species from the north went there?
I'm pretty confused on how species handled this huge change in climate without there being a mass die-off of some kind.

Text: General anesthesia is described as a paralytic and an amnesiac. So, you can't move, and you can't remember what happened afterwards.
Based on that description alone, however, it doesn't necessarily indicate that you are unaware of what is happening in the moment, and then simply can't remember it later.
In fact, I think there have been a few reported cases of people under general anesthesia that were aware of what was going on during surgery, but unable to move...and they remembered/reported this when they came out of anesthesia.
So, in other words, they had the paralytic effect but not the amnesiac one.
My question, then, is: when you are under general anesthesia are you actually still awake and aware, but paralyzed, and then you simply don't remember any of it afterwards because of the amnesiac effect of the anesthesia?
(Depending on which way this goes, I may be sorry I asked the question as I'm probably going to have surgery in the future. I should add that I'm an old dude, and I've had more than one surgery with anesthesia in my life, so I'm not asking because it's going to be my first time and I'm terrified. I'm just curious.)
